The Rainbow or Raindrop Technique is a type of massage therapy based on Native American healing principles. It's designed to enhance detoxification and restore balance.

Introduced to the spa community by Gary Young, the creator of Young Living oils, the Rainbow or Raindrop Technique uses nine essential oils to help rid the body of bacteria, fungi, and viruses. VitaFlex, which combines reflexology, acupuncture, and acupressure is also employed to help rejuvenate the body.

Oils

Oils used in the rainbow technique include:

  • Valor
  • Wintergreen
  • Cypress
  • Marjoram
  • Peppermint
  • Aroma Siez
  • Oregano
  • Thyme
  • Basil

What to Expect

The client lays face-down on a massage table. Oils are dropped onto the back from a height of 6 to 12 inches. The therapist then massages the oil into the skin with light, feathering strokes. A warm towel is then draped over the back to allow enhance penetration of the oils. The therapist massages the skin and wipes off the remaining oil. A second application of oils is drizzled onto the back to balance the system.

The Vita Flex Massage technique used in the Raindrop Technique benefits the back by stimulating circulation and promoting lymphatic drainage, while the essential oils have anti-viral, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. These essential oils help the body rid itself of the viruses, bacteria and toxins that cause inflammation, pain and disfigurement in the spine. These specific oils also enable the detoxification process to continue for up to seven days following each Raindrop Technique session.

In some spas, the Raindrop Technique can be added to any type of massage therapy for an additional fee. Alternately, some spas have designed their own signature rainbow technique massages, which may be combined with color therapy, chakra therapies, hot stones or other spa protocols.

Variations

The therapist Tesla of Lead, South Dakota combines massage and Tibetan energy techniques into a Rainbow Therapy Massage. This massage uses 9 highly antimicrobial oils designed by Tesla to bring the body into a higher frequency, electrical alignment and balance.

Laurel Gerber of Mt. Shasta, California has developed a form of rainbow therapy using stones, a colorchromatherapy wand, sound, flower essences, organic essential plant oils, creative visualization, breath work and intuitive healing techniques.

Benefits

The Raindrop Massage Technique was specifically designed to promote back health and correct curvatures of the spine. Benefits include relief from back pain, correction of poor posture, re-alignment of the spine, and detoxification. In addition, the Rainbow Technique kills dormant viruses and bacteria along the spine, by drawing toxins to the skin surface.

This procedure also transforms a massage into a meditative healing session, which helps the client work through interpersonal issues, life changing events, trauma and stress, releasing, clearing and spiritual healing. By unblocking and balancing the body’s energy fields, the client has access to healing on all levels of functioning emotional, physical, spiritual, and mental.

Precautions

Oregano, thyme and basil are considered hot oils and are commonly found together in sports massage oils. Some individuals may be sensitive to these oils. Clients with a known sensitivity to any of these oils should inform their therapist to see if another oil can be substituted. Anyone noticing discomfort or burning during the procedure should immediately let his or her therapist know.
